Cross-paradigmatic, Crossdisciplinary, and Essential

In this book, Harald Warmelink draws on both his ethnographic work in EVE Online and on collected player surveys to study the ways in which online gaming groups might be playful organizations, as well as how those findings correspond with work organizations in the physical world. That research is furthermore grounded in an exceptionally well done fusion of not just existing game and organization studies, but also of game-related work that comes from various typically separate communities. Warmelink is as fluent with works done on recreational gaming as he is on the sutdy of management and educational simulation/games. Due to this, not only is the book a significant contribution to the study of online organizations and gaming communities, it is also a treasure trove of references for anyone looking into doing research in the same (or a closely related) area. As a result of this thorough (and consistently self-critical) approach, Warmelink is also able to offer some very valuable critique of over-enthusiastic gamification and game-based learning hype.
Online Gaming and Playful Organization is a very valuable contribution to both organizational and game studies. It would also make an excellent course book for both disciplines, had the publisher not decided to sell it only as high-priced editions. Therefore, both the scholar and the university teacher in me hope that a paperback version will be made available as soon as possible. This is, by far, too good a book to miss.
