Only in the late nineteenth century, however, did scholars begin to identify and decipher the original Babylonian sources, and the process of understanding those sources has been long and difficult.This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestial divination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babylonian tradition. Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.Contributors : Asger Aaboe, Alan C. About the Author
Elie Wiesel was born in 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. He was fifteen years old when he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz. After the war, Elie Wiesel studied in Paris and later became a journalist. During an interview with the distinguished French writer, Francois Mauriac, he was persuaded to write about his experiences in the death camps. The result was his internationally acclaimed memoir, La Nuit or Night, which has since been translated into more than thirty languages.

Poignant and honest first hand testimony of a Holocaust survivor that is difficult to put down.

I absolutely could not put this poignant first hand testimony written by a Holocaust Survivor and was glued to this graphic and depressing first hand account of the horror of the Nazi Concentration Camps. I was able to read it from cover to cover in one afternoon and was left with a mix of emotions that is difficult to put into words. Not since the Diary of Anne Frank have I been so moved by an account of what the Jewish people suffered during the reign of the Third Reich and their horrible attempt to destroy an entire group of people.

Inspiring, horrifying, and real!

I liked this book. I will not say I loved this book because the subject is too awful to be real. Reading this story I felt like that young boy asking "... Is this a dream..." It's hard for me, an infant of the 70's, a child of the 80's, a teen of the 90's, to believe that these atrocities ever occurred. I remember reading in history that Churchill/ Patton? (please correct me if I'm wrong) wanted pictures taken "... Because someday, there will be those who'll say 'this never happened'."
I feel for the survivors, their families. I worry for my children who will learn that great men like this author are less than current winners of this prestigious award. It is up to us, the third generation, the generation that makes or erases history, "to look into that young Jews eyes and say ... That we are not forgetting [them]. When their voices are stifled, we will lend them ours"
Here is my testimony in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

An Excellent Read

What to say about this book. It is so thought provoking. It is not just about the atrocities committed by the Germans. There are many Holocaust books written by survivors. This book is about faith and the loss of innocence and the ability to believe. Like the author, I always believed that God was a kind, merciful and loving God. If that is true , then how could he allow so many innocent people be slaughtered down through the ages? Why do prayers go unanswered? This book is well-worth reading.

Journal for young ballerinas

As the title says, this is a journal and not a story book. It enables the user to record information over a year about their ballet class, friends, dress codes, ballet positions as well as giving reminders on different aspects of ballet - steps, moves, ways to stretch and the like. It also has space to record most embarrassing moments, dance roles, make up used and performances. Additionally there is a dictionary of Ballet terms. This could easily become a keepsake to remember key moments in that young ballerina's year.

What a fantastic book for any ballet dancing young ladies (sorry, not really appropriate for boy ballet dancers as all illustrations are of girls - unless they like wearing leotards, their hair in a bun, tiaras, etc though much of the rest would be fine for either gender)! It is a great guide to new ballet dancers, offering tips and guidance. It is also a colouring book enabling the user to totally personalise their journal by both their art work and their entries. It could easily be used to record progress throughout its use. Very personal point of view, wish it was also appropriate for male dancers - with images of them as well as female ones. hence the rating. For girls it would be higher, boys lower so gave it a middle rating.

It's a journal that every ballerina would like to have

Given To Me For An Honest Review

My Ballet Journal by Monica Wellington is NOT a storybook. It's a journal that every ballerina would like to have. This journal can hold all of a ballerina's ballet needs. It is also an activity book. Included are ballet positions and hair and makeup ideas. There are many tips and ballet suggestions included. At the end of the book is a glossary of words that ballerinas use. This journal is a great place for every ballerina to keep all of her secrets. I gave this 5 stars but it deserves many more. I just loved it!! I highly recommend it to everyone, especially anyone who has a child in ballet. I look for more from Monica Wellington.

Sweet and Encouraging

An adorable book. I can see myself giving this to one of my nieces. So sweet. No story involved but the story your child will create. I feel it is an encouraging journal and also reinforces some of the basic ballet poses. I especially liked the embarrassing moment page. Makes you think you are not alone when you goof.

The aim is to teach readers to apply optimization tools to derive analytical solutions leading to customized, dynamic, proactive, and real-time marketing decisions.

The book develops the CCM framework and illustrates it with four cases that span the life cycle of marketing: pricing, win-back, cross-sales, and customer service allocation. The text walks the reader through real-world examples of applying the framework (supported by spreadsheet models available online), then explains the key concepts: modeling consumer choice; segmenting customers into latent classes based on sensitivity; computing customer lifetime value (CLV); and dynamic optimization. The reader then learns to incorporate the continuous learning of customer preference into an adaptive feedback loop for marketing decisions. The book can be used as a text for MBA students or as a professional reference.

This book is based on joint research developed at Carnegie Mellon University when both authors were on the faculty at the Tepper School of Business.

What we need to know about in parenting a child w/ RAD

I don't think this is about the format of the book as much as the content of the book! As a self-published book Jessie did an outstanding job presenting his story. I believe his purpose was to educate and to present information from the heart. Who better to discuss this life altering diagnosis as one who lived it! I wish this book had been a round 22 years ago. My step daughter has reactive attachment d/o and I know I parented her wrong. Expecting a child who never attached to act like one who did, was one of the biggest mistake I made in trying to parent her. I have since gone on to get my master's degree in social work and have worked with many, many children who have RAD. I know from this work that the story presented by Jessie is an accurate portrayal of RAD. His suggestions for helping a child w/ RAD were right on. If you are parenting a child w/ RAD or know a child with RAD I highly recommend this first person account of this disorder.

Wish I had known about this book before

As a parent of two adopted sons, one who has had struggles with attachment, respect and empathy, and one who has textbook RAD, I found this book so helpful. I have had to make the tough calls that Jessie Hogsett's parents had to make. This is a must read for parents with RAD kids and for parents considering adoption foster care. It was so helpful to see RAD through the eyes of a survivor. It helped me understand my son's so much better. I felt like I was reading their autobiographies. If you have a child with RAD, this book will help you be armed to hold on tight, even while making the tough calls for what is best for you child.

Great insight in to what my adopted children might be thinking

I really enjoyed this book. As a mother of 5, 4 of which are adopted from foster care it gave me great insight to some of the things that might be going through their heads. I applaud Jessie for being brave enough to put his story out their for the world to read and to help thousands of adoptive parents better understand what is going on with their child(ren)

The delightfully suspect and satirical tone of Tharoor's title informs and enlivens his monumental tale. In an opening disclaimer, the author cites the Mahabharata , an ancient Hindu epic, as the source of his inspiration. The story he retells, however, is also a thinly veiled account of the people and events that shaped India during the struggle for independence from British rule. Tharoor recasts these in a mythological, fictive realm, skillfully interweaving elements of traditional Eastern and Western literature. The epic, the sonnet, the novel and the folk tale all help to shape the narrative, just as history and myth, dream and reality intertwine in every chapter, calling into question the validity of categories. "One must be wary of history by anecdote," warns the narrator; one must be wary of "history" itself, suggests Tharoor. Despite his stereotypical treatment of British and Indian characters, he animates history with the imagination of an artist and the philosophy of a sage. Throughout, Tharoor appropriates titles, phrases and figures from the work of a pantheon of "first-world" writers, ranging from E. M. Forster and Rudyard Kipling to Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Koestler (and even including his contemporary Salman Rushdie)--a subtle but potent reversal of the traditional tide of cultural colonialism.

Basing his convoluted story on the Mahabharata , with its 18 chapters or Parvans and similar incidents or characters (e.g., a blind king; five brothers sharing one wife), Tharoor coalesces myth, dreams, folklore, religion, and legend in this first-person, near-death life narration of Ved Vyas. The reader suspends disbelief as the garrulous old man omnisciently relates secret conversations, lustful couplings, the assassination of Ganga Data (read Ghandi), and the intimacies of Lord and Lady Drewpad (read Mountbatten). Overambitious Tharoor amalgamates the epic's components with India's freedom struggles with Great Britain. Intermittently humorous, satiric, and fantastic, with word-play and recurrent verse, this work is most effective when discussing Data/Ghandi: his enemas, celibacy, hunger strikes, and tragic failure to bring peace and well-being to India, where today corruption and double-dealing insidiously multiply.

A great novel.

Nothing new under the sun.

For me, the book works in a number of ways:
1. Recasting the Mahabharata into modern India.
Two bits struck me: the story of Karna, the driver's son, and Drona teaching the Panduva. The first because of the way personal brilliance can be discounted on the basis of family tree; the second for the retelling of aiming at the crow and Drona's promise to Arjuna.
2. The names.
Apart from the characters from the Mahabharata, there's also whole new cast of characters who reflect the modern world. Two names stand out in my mind. "Gaga Shah" is the story's name for the Aga Kahn. Given the antics of the various Aga Kahns, "Crazy Emperor" is not a bad characterization. Then there's Zinna as Karna - "The Hacker Off" - hacking off Pakistan - "Karnistan" - for himself.
3. Showing the relevance of myth.
Personally, I have a tendency to discount the mythos in favor of the logos, but mythos comes first, and recurs. Casting the Mahabharata onto modern history is a great way to show there's nothing fundamentally new under the sun.
This book made for a great over-Christmas, by-the-fire-with-an-adult-beverage read.

I found this book very useful when I was asked to do a research project during my OT level II fieldwork. I knew what type of experiment I wanted to do, but was having trouble with the statistical aspect of the project. This book did a nice job of explaining step by step how to chose your statistical test depending on your experimental design. It also walked you through step by step how to do the calculations. I had tried looking online for answers to my questions, but just became more confused. This book cleared things up for me very nicely.
