This region supports the most diverse marine fauna of any place in the world for most groups of organisms. The opisthobranchs (nudibranchs and other sea slugs) are no exception to this rule. There are about 3,000 described species of opisthobranchs in the world and at least 40% of these have been found exclusively in the Indo-Pacific tropics. This book illustrates 1,953 Indo-Pacific opisthobranchs, including many undescribed species.

With the evolution of chemical defenses and the loss of the shell, came the evolution of the bright color patterns that are the signature of nudibranch diversity; vivid colors advertise the presence of toxicity or distastefulness. About the Author
Terrence Gosliner is senior curator at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology of the California Academy of Sciences. Terry has devoted his 50-year research career to the scientific study of opisthobranchs and has published many papers and several books. Ángel Valdés is an Associate Professor of Biology at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and Research Associate at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences. Ángel s research career focuses on the study of the biodiversity, phylogeny and biogeography of nudibranchs and other sea slugs and has published more than 120 scientific papers on these topics as well as several field guides. David Behrens is a retired adjunct professor of Marine Biology and Oceanography at Pierce College in Washington and Research Associate at the California Academy of Sciences. Dave has a prolific career as an opisthobranch researcher and he is best known as the author of field guides and other books on opisthobranchs.

Happy to see this back in print.

Like Neville Coleman's revised nudibranch book I purchased this to take to Indonesia and leave at the dive center we frequent. The previous edition of this book published by Sea Challenger was fantastic but no longer in print and the used versions, if available, were unbelievably expensive. I am so happy this is out in this form. The information and photos are excellent. I like this format as it is smaller and easier to pack for dive trips.

The latest sea slug identification guide

It's no surprise that Terrence Gosliner is the world's leading authority on Indo-Pacific sea slugs, just as John E. Randall is the leading authority on Indo-Pacific fishes. In keeping with the latest taxonomic revisions, this book greatly updates the taxonomy of Indo-Pacific sea slugs and adds new species, including reversing the placement of the Jolly Green Giant in Ceratosoma as Ceratosoma sinuata. Interestingly, the unnamed species of Goniobranchus from Midway reminds me of Goniobranchus petechialis, especially the mantle coloration pattern.

If anyone is interested in shelless gastropods, I recommend this lavish field guide.

Disappointing, not user friendly

Extensive listing of nudibranchs and related species but written for those with scientific background. Very difficult to use for divers/photographers or those not familiar with scientific terminology. Unlike other books in this series this one provides NO guidelines to help with identification. That means you must search though EVERY page of photographs trying to make identification, almost a complete waste of money for my purposes, very disappointing

About the Author

Kerr Houston is a professor of art history, theory, and criticism at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he has taught since 2002. At MICA regularly leads seminars on art criticism, and also teaches courses in the history of art history, in ancient art, and in Islamic art and architecture. He has written for a number of journals, including Camera Obscura, Gesta, Source: Notes in the History of Art, and Early Modern Visual Culture; he has also authored criticism for several magazines and newspapers. This is his first book.

Essential text; superlative writing

Kerr Houston's book explains, summarizes and evaluates the work of art critics and philosophers of art since the 1700s. While there are plenty of books about the history of criticism, and criticism in specific genres (like cinema, for example), there are very few that focus solely on art history. While Houston's book is not an edited anthology, his arguments and explanations are built around selected extracts, so readers can get a sense of each critic's style and tone, as well as their method and arguments. On top of that, the author himself steers clear of theoretical jargon; his graceful prose is a model for any aspiring art critic. Highly recommended.

It does not match up with the recordings that are supposed to go with it. Also, some questions look like the authors got lazy, and didn't finish organizing them.

Ponto de Encontro Activities are fine

I would give the book itself, and the activities a 5 star rating. I like the layout, and it pairs well with the book, and listening exercises. find that the option to do Potugal Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese very fun. I also like how you have plenty of options and exercises to cover any topic in the book. The numbering of the activities and the pages can be confusing, but you get used to it soon. I would recommend doing the activities while learning something in the book and listening to the audio tape. I think that way, it really cements itself in. The only complaint I have was from the seller, I bought the book from. I ordered the textbook brand new, and received a used book with pen markings and completed exercises up to the second chapter, including some of the second chapter. Other than that, it is a good book.

Philip D. Plowright is Associate Professor of Architectural Design, History and Theory at Lawrence Technological University. He is a founder of the systems-based think tank, synchRG, a registered architect, and Managing Editor of Enquiry/The ARCC Journal of Architectural Research. He has published and lectured widely around issues of meaning, interpretation and process in architectural design.

It's a must read

As an interior designer and history enthusiast pursuing a M.Arch, this book was recommended to me and I am so glad I bought it. The concepts and ideas helped me transition my interior design mind into an architectural way of thinking. It was a great supplement to read and reference during a studio course because it connected different ways of researching, as well as how those ways can be utilized in projects for meaningful design. I appreciated the deeply rooted historical context - not only was it educational on the history of architecture, but it provided a connection to the "why" part of architectural design. This book connected the dots for me in so many ways. Before reading this book, I primarily used reading and writing as forms of research and context, however, the examples in the book take research further. Now I find myself making diagrams in all my research papers! They are awesome! I anticipate using this book as a reference for years to come. Definitely buy it if you can; it's worth a lot more than it costs.

Wish I had this when I started architecture!

I really wish I had something like this when I first started architecture school. I have since obtained a Master of Architecture and I find that basic principles and concepts that I have had to dig for over the course of 9 years are clearly laid out in this treatise. It is not a "how to do architecture" book, but a great guide in the individuals own journey in architectural education.

Every first year architecture student should own a copy of this book. It lays out in a clear and understandable way the basic principles of architectural thinking and process methodology. Furthermore, the author does a good job of demystifying the erroneous notion that architecture is an arbitrary and strictly intuitive discipline. At the end of reading this book, the student will be able to navigate through various frameworks (Concept based, Type based, and Force based) and be able to deploy divergent and convergent thinking streams. Using the book as a guide in early design studios will help students discover which methodology is best for them in working through creative issues. Definitively something to add to the library.

The philosophical processes described within are instantly applicable to most aspects of design, offering a valid proof to naysayers remaining lost in the world of archi-babble.

Highly recommendable to first and second year students, or anyone wishing to use Platonic methods to explain/explore design methodology!
