Camila Villasana likes her hair-"It's wavy like the ocean." Colette Cosner likes her hands "because they turn the pages of a book slowly and magically." Andrew Legge likes his legs because they "carry me a long way." The result is insight into how the children of varied ethnicities see themselves and take pride in their heritage. The book is an outgrowth of the Literacy Through Photography program Ewald originated at Duke University. This example of a successful writing prompt might be used to encourage students to think more about their own bodies and self-images.

Gr. 1-3. Photographer Ewald worked with 15 ethnically diverse North Carolina school-children and their teachers to investigate how kids feel about their bodies. Each child selected a favorite body part and contributed a signed, handwritten paragraph or poem about it. Camila Villasana, who chose her hair, writes, "It comes from my Mexican heritage. Its [sic] wavy like the ocean." Ewald's tightly focused, tenderly realistic black-and-white photographs do the rest. The images mix the mundane and the poetic in equal parts and reflect the children's differences in self-esteem. About the Author
Wendy Ewald is a writer, photographer, and teacher dedicated to children's issues. Her photos have appeared in The New York Times, Elle, Harper's, and DoubleTake, among others, and are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography. She has received numerous prizes for her work, among them a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship. The poems and photographs in this book are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program she originated in the Durham, NC public schools.

a thoughtful exposition through narrative

This is a readable, if initially patchy, account of early biological evolution, strung together through a narrative of the author's career travels.

In early chapters the comparison of a cell to an ocean-going vessel is laid on a little thick as metaphors like "lapses in procedure" and the "Chartroom" tend to confuse the real information about cell biology, even to the point that the writer incorrectly terms DNA as a binary code (p 48). The narrative, tracing the evolution of cell organelles and subsequently of more complex life, is punctuated by references to "secrets" in order to allow the author to further convey tales of discovery. This is mainly enjoyable, if a little old school. A 1970s survey of the Sargasso Sea negotiates turbulent waters while hinting at possible ways that the nucleus and organelles are integrated into eukaryote cells, an underwater reef is charted while explanations of symbiotic mechanisms are recounted. Further chapters trace growing evidence of global warming and then the narrative also warms as the author introduces the great Lynn Margulis, pulling together the cell symbiosis theory of organelles in the chapter, The Mangrove Tree. Further accounts of science reveal the human side of discovery, from mistakes, hard work to apparent fraud, all portrayed warmly and reminiscent of Stephen Jay Gould's Wonderful Life. Some of the author's observations of Australia, in particular of water management practice, irked me slightly as supercilious, however his rendition of the landscape, characters and geology, again, compensate. Ironically, the Australian landscape tested the author's own water management credentials, almost tragically.

This review is not an attempt to flag all of the intriguing topics this book covers but rather to convey its flavour. The author is a fine story teller with any hint of rambling compensated for by good exposition of evolutionary biology, and facilitated by geographical and biographical raconteuring. His final chapter rounds off the `boring billions' hypothesis that he teased out throughout the book. But it is his "efficiency is fatal" corollary, told through an odd "Albert and Emily" story, which provides elegant and credible conjecture on the less considered risks to future human evolution, which wins Secret Chambers five stars.

much story with facts sprinkled in

This book is a mishmash; combining history, anecdotes, facts, and the adventures of the author. The facts are often explained by analogy; a very difficult way to learn something with any sense of accuracy.

I dislike such books, as I get bored with the stories (the history retelling is rather scatter shot in this book), and can never find my way back to some fact, as the book's organization does not allow it (the section titles are story based).

If you like reading non-fiction books for storytelling, with some interesting tidbits thrown in, this may be a book for you. If you want to learn much of anything about cellular biology, the supposed subject of this book, read something else.

A very authentic mystery

Many times while traveling the nations highways, I have enjoyed the rest areas and truck stops for their vibrant air of America on the move. Travel these same roads alone and in the dark of night and your perspective changes dramatically. This is when I prefer to have a large dog and a handgun with me. The victims of what the FBI called the "truck stop killer" did not have the sense of danger and lost their lives. The book opens with Maggie O'Dell and her partner checking an obvious burial site for this killer. As the body count on the site behind the rest stop increases, Maggie and her fellow profilers and friends find that this killer has a strange fascination with Maggie and has already torched her home. The killer's identity is a mystery although they know much about him. A cadaver dog handler piques dog lover Maggie's interest and admiration. New bodies linked to the killer keep Maggie moving though Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa as well as the East Coast. Is she pursuing or being lured to the killer? The final confrontation is as unexpected as it is dangerous to Maggie and those she cares for.

Another Captivating Action-Packed Thriller in Alex Kava's Maggie O'Dell Series! Enjoy!

Since 2008, I have read many Alex Kava's thrillers in her FBI Agent Maggie O'Dell series. For me, each becomes increasingly addictive. This captivating 320-page suspense thriller, "Stranded" is my favorite to date.

Kava holds the readers' focus through believable, memorable characters, smooth transitions, perfect pace, intriguing subplots, vividly descriptive writing and choice of words that are not x-rated.

In this case, an evil, mysterious, insidious serial killer crisscrosses American highways seeking unsuspecting victims at rest stops to terrorize and murder. The author uses short chapters and converging stories beginning with grisly scenes just off interstate 70 outside Manhattan, Kansas and another just off interstate 29 outside Sioux City Iowa to develop this spellbinding plot.

While this is a standalone novel, I would recommend reading some of the earlier novels in this series to appreciate the intricate background and careful development of the most prominent returning characters in the series.

Margaret "Maggie" O'Dell and R J Tully are seasoned Virginia based FBI agents. Their boss, Assistant Director Raymond Kunze assigned them to the FBI's Serial Killing Initiative that started years earlier with the creation of a database of murder victims found along United States Highways and interstates, now numbering over 500. The database was created to allow local law enforcement officers a source to check whether murders in their jurisdiction might be related to victims in other states.

Up to this point, the psychopathic killer meticulously planned and gave careful forethought implementing his sick game without a pattern or trail. It seemed all too easy for him; however, seeking a more stimulating challenge, he plots bigger game, intentionally leaving clues, to draw in a new target--Agent O'Dell.

Enter an intriguing new character and possible star of his own series, Ryder Creed, from Florida who is introduced when Agent Tully solicits Ryder and his partner, Hannah's company's services, Crime Scent K9. Ryder rescues and trains abandoned dogs like Jack Russell white terrier, Grace to track cadavers or missing people in various settings.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in riveting series. I bet you will too!

Hang onto your hats, this is one wild ride!

I've read other Alex Kava thrillers and knew what to expect and wasn't the least bit disappointed.
FBI special agent, Maggie O'Dell and her partner are drawn into the web created by a serial killer who is leaving bodies near open highways. The victims are not similar excepting the fact that they were in a vulnerable situation. It isn't long before Maggie realizes the killer has formed a connection with her. As to be expected, Maggie begins to figure out what is going on, but ends up finding herself in a life-threatening situation, not only for herself but also for her partner. I found it impossible to put down until I reached the end. And one added intriguing element is introduced in the possibility of a new romance for Maggie, making anxious for the next book in the series.
