DESPICABLE THEM

Despicable would not be strong enough. I ran the gamut of negative emotions, outrage, disgust, sorrow. To use every day descriptive vernacular would invite censoring. Through the years I have often heard news of the shrinking rain forests around the world. I attributed it to the increasing world population. I also heard briefs on Palm Oil Plantations and envisioned farms as one might see in the bread baskets of the world. If half of the stories in Money Logging are true, the desecration of our planet by these criminals far exceed disasters such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill or the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Imagine if you can Eden, where the indigenous people live entirely on the bounty of the rain forest. No need to raise crops or farms of livestock for consumption. Try to envision the spectacular species of flowers, birds, butterflies and other exotic gifts of nature. Now read Money Logging and find how graft, corruption, greed and every despicable human characteristic known to exist has been and is destroying these very natural resources. Day to day warnings of global warming, stories of droughts, floods, mudslides and other so called natural disasters can likely be traced in part to the destruction of these rain forests. Unknown and perhaps gone are the plants waiting for discovery that may produce medical cures. Gone are the trees known to remove carbon dioxide and other toxins. And can it be genocide when an indigenous population is deprived of their ability to obtain sustenance? Maybe not genocide by definition but perhaps extermination by deprivation. All this for the quest for power and wealth of a few of the world’s bad characters, many of whom are of an extended family. These people make recent dictators of the Middle East seem like good Samaritans. The lot of them should be exiled to a snake infested Island so they can live out the rest of their lives with their resident relatives. This book should be mandatory reading for every literate being in the affected countries.

Excellent and well-researched book

This excellent and important book is a great introduction to the terrible environmental and financial crimes that have happened on Borneo over the last fifty years. It is an exciting read--starting with the thrilling story of a whistleblower--and helped me understand the link between corruption and destruction of natural resources, not only in Asia, but around the world.

Good bedtime reading (really!)

The words, "I just couldn't put it down!" probably have never been spoken in reference to a textbook, much less a physiology textbook, but I can honestly say that this book was quite a compelling read. The writing style approximates a narrative more than a lecture.
Lingappa and Farey manage to keep the textbook at the perfect level of detail -- not too hot, not too cold, but just right. It is also obvious that a great deal of thought went into organizing the textbook. The clinical correlation boxes are outstanding, and provide tantalizing insights into the world of clinical medicine -- insights that are exceedingly valuable if you're a medical student such as myself. The "Frontiers of Research" and "Summary" sections of each chapter are also extremely helpful (especially if you've gotta lotta cramming to do).
But in my opinion, the best part of the textbook is the case presentations. Through the cases, I not only gained knowledge about physiology, I also learned a great deal about the practice of medicine in general, specifically concerning the constraints within which medicine in this country is currently practiced.
I give this textbook my highest recommendation. Useful even if it's not the required text. . .

Lingappa's and Farey's Rules

My name is Marco Antonio Vazquez and I am a physician from Mexico. To tell the truth, "Physiological Medicine" is an excelent book. Unfortunately, there is not an spanish edition. You see, when I was a medical student, I did not read english and I had never had a chance to read a book like this one. I remember that I used to read some good Physiology's books: Berne and Levy, Guyton and Best and Taylor.
In my private practice, because of the clinical cases, I have used this book a lot. This cases makes me think in real human beens with real problems. Because of this situations I think medicine is an art.
In some ways due to this book I have become to be a much more humble physician. I believe that I understand better my own limitations. Nature is quite much more complex that I used to think. In some way, I think that nature defends itself against some of our medical actions.
I really enjoy reading books like this and Lehninger's Biochemistry. It is fantastic to understand the real foundations, how it works our body, from biomolecules to organs and systems. I hope that this very basic knowledge makes me a better physician and human been at last.
DO NOT HESITATE, YOU SHOULD BUY THIS WONDERFUL BOOK¡¡¡¡

First Year Medical Student's Thoughts

Overall, this is a very good textbook and Drs. Lingappa and Farey should be commended for the work that they have done. The clinical focus makes the text much more interesting to read. The cases used to introduce each chapter provide good examples of how physiology can be used in a clinical setting and often adhere to the tone of the modern medical environment. The charts and diagrams used to illustrate the concepts do a good job of facilitating and summarizing the knowledge presented in each chapter. As the old adage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. In all, this textbook provided a very good description of "big picture" physiology.

This book offers invaluable references for travel, literature art...heck, even songs by Sting! I purchased my first copy while in art school where I couldn't keep straight all of the tales of love, betrayal and revenge in the ancient world. After four months in Italy and Greece it is worn, torn and lovingly wine stained, but it has served me well. I used it to decipher names on structures in the Roman Forum and to reveal the meaning of paintings in the Ufizzi. Without it my travels would not have been nearly as rich.

You can always depend on a 'Making of' book with Guillermo del Toro's involvement to be stellar. The man just oozes creativity. And this is a great 'Behind the Scenes'-type book that pairs remarkably well with the television series. I was a fan of the original novels and I'm happy to see del Toro and FX develop them for the small screen with a production that rivals most Hollywood movies. With concept art by the incomparable Guy Davis and Keith Thompson (whose art graces the cover!) as well as del Toro regulars Juan Pablo Garcia Tames and Francisco Ruiz Velasco--I'm beside myself with glee. The book also details the progression of The Master and his 'strigoi' underlings along with other beasties I'll let you discover for yourself. Look, if you're a fan of the series or a del Toro groupie or just appreciate the process of making a series of this caliber, check it out. I'll guarantee this will shine in your collection just as it does in mine.
