About the Author
Mark Greaney has a degree in international relations and political science. In his research for the Gray Man novels, including Back Blast, Dead Eye, Ballistic, On Target, and The Gray Man, he traveled to more than fifteen countries and trained alongside military and law enforcement in the use of firearms, battlefield medicine, and close-range combative tactics. If trouble ever comes my way, I want The Gray Man on my side!

Anyone looking for an action thriller hero need look no further than here, to Court Gentry. After running afoul of his bosses in the CIA and being put on that agency's shoot-on-sight-list, Gentry has been earning his living doing what he has been trained to do, he takes out targets he is paid to terminate. Anyone associated with hired assassins knows about The Gray Man. This man has the uncanny ability to simply fade into the background. His targets never see him coming and the investigations afterward never find any connection to anyone. The reputation of this man grows to legendary proportions because of his complete anonymity, nobody is ever completely sure of who he actually is. There is only one man who positively knows the identity of this operative, his handler Sir Donald Fitzroy of Cheltenham Security Services. At least that's what Sir Donald thought. Someone literally wants The Gray Man's head delivered on a platter and there is no limit to the amount of money they are willing to spend to achieve that goal. What follows is an incredibly exciting journey from Iraq to a chateau in Normandy with danger, destruction, and death all along the route. A bounty has been put on The Gray Man's head and paid assassins have been invited to join in the hunt to see who can deliver him, dead or alive, to the chateau before the time limit runs out.

I had to keep reminding myself that this is a debut novel for author Mark Greaney. The plotting for this book is outstanding. The pace started out with an exciting episode and just never let up. The man behind the legend was very slowly revealed so that he did seem to be a shadowy figure, a ghostly figure, someone who could fade in and out simply because there was no substance to him. Over time this very talented author lets the reader come closer and closer to the main character to glimpse his intelligence, his efficiency in doing his work, and his moral code. It may sound unusual to consider that a person who kills for a living would have a moral compass but Court Gentry does. And it is believable. Characters are well defined and clear, the dialogue is crisp and clean and well suited to each character. This author did a wonderful job of describing both locations and weaponry used in the story and it is very obvious that he is familiar with both subjects. While there are a large number of professional killers involved in tracking Gentry down, I think this was necessary to represent the "contest" nature of the hunt. I really like that Greaney finished off the story by tying up loose ends, nothing was left unresolved. And yet, could it possibly be that The Gray Man isn't finished yet? I certainly hope not.

I do not assign 5 star ratings to books lightly. They have to earn that designation from me. This book would probably get an even higher rating from me if the Amazon system would allow it. I found the book to be well written, well plotted, and very, very exciting.

Full on action thriller

A very strong action thriller from a debut author. The emphasis here is very much on the action as hitman Court Gentry takes down a guy with powerful friends, as a result a significant bounty is put on his head as hit teams are drafted in from all over the world.

There are lots of elements in here that I had seen before, the paranoia of Ludlum's thriller, the hit man from Tom Cain's "Accident Man" and the action from Matthew Reilly's "Ice Station". This is not a twisting thoughtful thriller, it is page turning action as our hero fights his was through Europe to a bloody climax in France.

It's a hard genre to come up with anything very new or unique, and to be honest the author doesn't. But what he has come up with is a very entertaining page turner that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. And what differentiates it from a generic pulp action thriller is that it is well researched and well written. If there are minor flaws it is that our hero is fairly indestructible and slightly light on character, but the book's strength is in the pace and the action.

I read this on the back of two other thrillers and this was a massive improvement and I very much enjoyed it. It's not subtle and it's 'in your face' with pace and violence and it will be interesting to see how the author takes the character forward in what I hope will be many future books.

Bloody good action novel

I have been looking for a good action novel for a while, not finding much to stack up to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, until, while waiting for hours in an airport, happenned upon this gem. The first chapter had me hook, line and sinker. Court Gentry is the definitive action hero. The harrowing battles with hitsquads from all over the globe, the betrayals of those he trusted most, and the quick wit and determination of this character will keep you turning the pages. The author's timing is impeccible as he transitions between chapters leaving you both anticipating the next, and amazed by the previous. If this does not one day become a major motion picture, I will be stunned.

Mark Greaney has picked up a fan with this one and I can't wait to read the next one.

Andrea Alvin, John's wife of 37 years and studio partner, is a fine artist and designer who worked with John on many of his famous poster campaigns. She gives background stories and insight to the creation of movie ad campaign and John's creative process and technique.

John Alvin was an American movie artist who painted movie poster art for over 130 films, including E.T., Blade Runner, The Lion King, The Princess Bride and Jurassic Park, as well as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He also produced work for Disney Fine Art (Disney character official portraits).

Insightful and inspiring John Alvin retrospective

The Art of John Alvin is a wonderful retrospective and tribute to the late artist who passed away in 2008.

This 160-page hardcover collects the movie posters he has created from 1974 to 1999 plus a special commissioned piece completed in 2007. The artworks includes the finished posters, preliminary sketches, colour drafts and many unused never seen before art.

The reproduction of the artworks is very well done. Many are printed huge and given the full page treatment they deserve. The completed movie poster illustrations are beautiful, and even the sketches are quite a joy to look at as some of them are really detailed.

John Alvin's foray into illustrating movie posters started in 1974 with Blazing Saddles. Soon after that, he got called up to create many more, such as for Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi. E.T., Willow, Batman, Batman Returns, Jurassic Park, several Disney classics such as Pinocchio, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and many more other movies.

Each movie he worked on comes with several sketches, finished coloured illustrations and the final actual poster. For Jurassic Park there were more than a dozen rough drawings and colour layouts.

The artworks are all accompanied commentary that includes the story behind the posters, on how he got the job, conceptualising and even the techniques he used to create the illustrations. The behind the scenes stories are all provided by his wife Andrea Alvin who works alongside him in his studio. No wonder the writeup is so informative and detailed.

It's nice to read about the technical stuff, to find out how he worked, for example, to create the glow behind the words for E.T., he cut out a cardboard for the words and sprayed around them. There are bits of technical talk here and there for the posters.

Overall, this is a well produced, insightful and inspiring artbook.

Highly recommended.

What is the common point between Blade Runner, King Lion E.T, Jurassik Park, Batman forever and Star Wars the return of Jedi?
It is all movies which marked the cinema, finally not for Batman Forever, which has almost killed Batman.
No, the real common point, it is because we remember posters cinema of all these movies, for a very good reason, they are the work of a real artist: John Alvin.
Regrettably, John left us in 2008, and 6 years later we have an artbook tribute: The art of John Alvin.

I am not longer going to keep waiting you, The art of John Alvin, is an absolutely magnificent artbook, because he does not make that to present us the most known posters that he realized. Indeed he would have been able to be easy to make an artbook which I would call "catalog".

No, here there is a real work, and on a real one loves for the work, that includes it in a sense because this book was realized by his wife. So we learn on the work of conception and research. I adored seeing in front pages the sheets of paper with the researches for posters for the promotional campaign of Jurassik Park.

The book The art of John Alvin, presents us in the course of 160 pages, posters in a chronological way, from 1974 to 2007 to posters Star Wars Célébration 4. What is brilliant with the work of John, it is that we have a multitude of varied movies, so the fan of Disney will be in seventh heaven with posters of King lion, of Aladdin or another fantastic poster of The Little Mermaid. The fan of Star Wars will not be forgotten with posters of movies, but also convention.

My preference goes particularly to pages dedicated to Jurassik Park, who remains a great moment of cinema for the child fan of dinosaurs whom I was in 1995. I could also speak to you his inimitable style, playing on the light, or still the sketches a lot in black and white for the movie E.T or Willow of a very big wealth. I could speak about height of thing, but I prefer to let you look at the video, and tell you that The art of John Alvin is simply essential for every person who adores the cinema.

Amazing Book, Features Iconic Art by John Alvin

My favorite movie posters are the Disney ones from the mid-90s -- the versions used for "adult' marketing. Turns out all of my favorite ones were created by John Alvin.

This book celebrates his work. His career, spanning decades, included work for Disney, MGM, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, and Warner Bros. Inside the pages of The Art of John Alvin, you'll find many examples of the art he created for those studios (and I can't imagine how hard it was to obtain permission to use all of the images!).

This 160 page book includes art from his iconic posters - The Lion King, Blade Runner, and ET, among many others - as well as concept sketches and images previously unavailable for public viewing. The book is broken down by movie in chronological order and includes commentary from his wife Andrea, who offers behind the scenes insights into the creative process.

My favorite images are from the Disney posters, namely Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid (although all the Disney art is stunning). Alvin's use of light in the posters and concept art is the work of a master. The Jurassic Park section is also notable - it contains amazing images that unfortunately weren't used in the movie's marketing campaign. Fans of Star Wars will also be pleased with the selections in the book. In summary: I really love the artwork and my only complaint is that I want MORE!!

Sadly for us, Alvin passed away in 2008. This book at least gives us a chance to peek behind the scenes and see the evolution of his creations. Some fans may even want two copies... one to keep as a book and one to use for images to hang in their house or at work :-)

Star Wars…The Middle School Years!

Before I stumbled across “The Phantom Bully”, I had not read any of the previous “Star Wars: Jedi Academy” graphic novels. So, I was coming into this one with a completely open and fresh perspective. The end result is that I was very entertained (even as an adult!) by the subject matter and the visuals and it really made me want to check out the previous two installments.

For a basic plot summary, “Phantom Bully” tells the story of Roan, a boy going through what is essentially the last year of “Padowan Middle School”. Like many other YA middle school novels, this one touches on topics like added responsibility, tough/crazy teachers, first crush, bullies, and the bonds of friendship. Roan must navigate all those social situations while at the same time trying to prove himself to be a true Jedi student.

Like I said, “Phantom Bully” covers many of the same tried-and-true themes of other novels with similarly aged protagonists. What makes this one stand out, of course, is that it can use the Star Wars brand to do it! Star Wars may be one of the most recognizable/popular franchises ever created, so it has instant appeal in storytelling possibilities. In this case, not only does Roan have to “survive middle school” (a common YA theme), but he has to do so with a professor who may be a Sith, another professor (Yoda) who talks backwards, Jedi mind tricks, an obstacle course featuring lightsaber battles, and a very diverse cast of characters/species all around him. To me, at least, that instantly ups the appeal of the story!

Another thing that helps give the story a lot of visual flare (obviously important for a graphic novel) is that it ties in so well to the Star Wars previously-established universe. There are the obvious ones, like a Wookie, Yoda, and a few characters who have the same characteristics as Darth Maul, but even the secondary characters all either exhibit physical traits or perform actions reminiscent of previous Star Wars canon material. This makes for many visual “aha!” moments that are fun to experience.

Overall, I very much enjoyed reading “The Phantom Bully” and can, from my unique-ish perspective, recommended it to all readers. Although I’m sure it would help to get a few “inside jokes”, you really don’t need to read the previous books in the series to enjoy this one…it stands on its own quite well. Solid themes + great visuals all tied together under the Star Wars universe = recipe for success.

This book is so nice!!! I have read all books. I was totally hook to this book when I went to my friend house to play and he was reading the first book. I asked what it was about and just said: wow.you don't know this series. After hearing that, I wentto a book store and bought the first book. When I saw the book cover at first,I was like what kind of stupid book is this. But after reading it, I was like never judge a book by its cover. NEVER! When I finished it, I waited for the next book for a few months and it finally came out. I like this book as it got my attention when i was browsing sing through the kindle store. I was shocked and bought it without checking how much it is. The book funny and nice. I am waiting anxiously for the next book(if it is going to come out)i will buy it first.

a perfect trio

I am a 9 year-old who has read all of the books so far. Now, I have finished the book and this book was GREAT. Roan and his famous novel strikes again, making a third book! When the first came out, I was enjoying the story and plot of the book. Then I saw the second book and was enjoying the story, although the first was better. One year later, came, the: JEDI ACADEMY #3 THE PHANTOM BULLY. Now according to the cover I was not THAT inspired to read, but I still was excited. DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!!! The book was amazing... except... Gainana was a little different to me, but the book still is amazing (if you want to know who Gainana is, then read the novel)! I hope you were inspired to read the book from my rating. I hope you like it.
