"These bodies are for ourselves," says Sonia Sanchez in the introduction to this candid and provocative set of essays, all centered squarely on black women's bodies-and the myths and misogynies located therein. Byrd has written for Vibe and Rolling Stone; Solomon is a former senior editor at the Source and current health editor for Essence. Together, they have gathered black women from a variety of walks of life, from hip hop icon Melyssa Ford and superstar singer Kelis to an AIDS-afflicted feminist activist, and a former prostitute serving twenty-five years for murdering "a john... who became the unintended victim of my rage and depression and self-hatred." In between are notes on "My Tush" ("Butt, ass, bum, booty, rump, onion, junk in the trunk, ba-dunck-ka-dunk, rear, backside"), "Ho Gear," "The Curl," "Femme Invisibility" and a host of other hot button body issues. As empowering as it is demystifying, this book does not avert its gaze for a moment.

Byrd and Solomon contribute to this collection of 25 essays by black women on a range of issues related to the black female body and image. Everything from hair to feet is explored within the context of American standards of beauty and individual journeys to self--acceptance. The contributors, ranging from young to old, from a variety of backgrounds and hues, share their feelings about their bodies: the attitudes and genes they inherited from their mothers, their treatment--ill and good--by the men in their lives, the influences of American culture on self-image, and their own evolving sense of self. The age-old debates about skin color, hair texture, and weight are prominently featured, but the women each have very personal stories to tell about their paths to accepting and loving themselves. Among the contributors are entertainers Kelis and Jill Scott, former video model Melyssa Ford, writer Jill Nelson, and television personality Iyanla Vanzant. A breath of fresh air!

I loved this book. It made me feel good to know that there are women out here that look beautiful on the outside, but feel ugly on the inside. It doesn't matter if the are ugly or pretty, skinny or fat, this book made me realize that we all feel insecure about ourselves and that we take something we don't like on our bodies and over exaggerate about it. I finally learned to accept my body for the way it is and I can now see myself the way others see me:)

Accurate, but with flaws.

The transcriptions in this book are very accurate, and in some parts even goes in depth into explain somethings, like pointing out notes that are really tape echo, and explaining why the G changes from beat one in the first two verses to beat two in the third verse onward in Dazed and Confused.

It's also very complete, including all of the guitar parts, and in some places transcribing other instruments for guitar.

However, there are some glaring errors in this book. There are places where the tablature does not match the notes that are written above. I've noticed this in several places throughout the book, and usually the notation is correct. So, if you only read tab, you might run into some problems in some spots. Either way, watch out for the mistakes.

Overall, I don't think you'll be disappointed. But, they could have spent a little more time proofreading before going to press.

Not The Typical Fake Book

For years I spent my money buying cowboy chord "made easy for guitar" fake books and never learned anything that didn't sound like campfire music. With the advent of tablature and Hal Leonard books you can now learn an accurately played version of songs by your favorite artists. Granted they are more dollars and cents but are well worth learning the version you really want to be playing. Now, if they would just print these in a format that the book could be opened up and laid flat without breaking the binding life would be perfect.

Great accuracy and choice onf songs

If you are a Zep fan and a guitar player you definetly must have this songbook! It's very accurate and the choice of songs is nearly perfect. One or two absolute classics have been left out, such as "In my time of dying", but it covers all the work of this majestic band!

Useful Reference Book

I do not have time to make my own book for class, and I don't have to because this book gives my students all the affixes they need to know. This book is very important to my middle school curriculum, and in the end-of-the-year survey, students mentioned this book and the one on roots as being the best reference book in the classroom.

This history of modern Italy began in March 1861 when Count Camillo Cavour proclaimed a united Italian kingdom with the goal of creating a prosperous, liberal new power in Europe. For a country whose ancient heritage had placed it at the center of western culture, this late entry into nationhood and rapid reach for power would bring frequent crisis. In this fully revised edition of his classic history of the country, Denis Mack Smith provides a complete and engaging narrative of the fate of Italy from Risorgimento to the present.
For sixty years after 1861 Italy was governed by a liberal oligarchy under a parliamentary constitution. Italy chose the winning side in the First World War, but the enormous costs of victory revealed social tensions and constitutional weaknesses that prepared the way, after 1920, for Europe's first fascist dictatorship.
After the painful civil war that followed World War II, Italy rediscovered liberal democracy, and under a new republican regime became one of the major industrialized countries of the world.
First published in 1958 as Italy: A Modern History, the book has been substantially rewritten with a new section on the period after 1945, a new bibliography, new maps, and updated factual appendices. Stylish, clearly written, deeply informed and often controversial, it remains the definitive account for anyone interested in modern Italy.

A magisterial study that will continue to be the benchmark for political histories of modern Italy. Mack Smith (Oxford Univ.) is considered the foremost historian of modern Italy in the English-speaking world, the author of biographies on Mussolini, Garibaldi, Mazzini and Victor Emanuele, and Cavour. Mack Smith has also written on Italy's unification and its monarchy. First published in 1959, the present work is fully updated (to 1996) and has been substantially rewritten. It is the most comprehensive and accessible study we have of modern Italy. The author is partial to the liberal-conservative tradition, but this in no way prevents him from criticizing the many faults of liberal Italy as it developed after unification: Social and economic problems were exacerbated rather than solved (or even addressed); the virus of nationalism and the myth of a Roman empire were carelessly and recklessly promulgated; and perhaps most dangerous of all, the political elite failed to forge a true civic culture after centuries of foreign and domestic despotism. The recent corruption scandals that have rocked the country and destroyed the old political order had their roots in the immediate postwar period, while we now know that the threat of terrorism was much graver from the shadowy Right than from the more dramatic Left. A very thorough review of Italian politics since unification

In this book, I got exactly what I wanted: an understanding of the actors, events, and movements in Italian political history starting with unification in the mid-19th century. Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Crispi, Giolitti, Mussolini, De Gasperi. The author does a wonderful job of constructing these characters (and others) while conveying the changing political and societal backdrop in which they labored. A lack of tempocentrism and equal emphasis on the earlier periods were very positive in my view. Detailed explanations of the causes, mechanisms, and failures of Mussolini and fascism were especially well done.

I wanted a background on the history of the Italian Republic of which I knew nothing about. This book fills in the blanks very well without getting too detailed.

unfortunately this attempt pales in comparison and is not a text I would recommend the true seeker or student of Italian history

Although touted by the british as the expert on modern Italian history Mack Smith is virtually laughed at in Italy amongst academics, his lack of research in anything other than works written in English and his penchant for re interpreting many events to his own likeing spoil the subject.

Study Italian and other texts written on the subject in german or French and you will gain much much clearer and more accurate insights into modern Italian History, unfortunately this attempt pales in comparison and is not a text I would recommend the true seeker or student of Italian history, rather disappointing and assumes an air of superiority throughout the narration that is simply distasteful.
