About the Author
: Alan Tussy teaches all levels of developmental mathematics at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. He has written nine math books-a paperback series and a hard-cover series. An extraordinary author, he is dedicated to his students' success, relentlessly meticulous, creative, and a visionary who maintains a keen focus on his students' greatest challenges. Alan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Redlands and his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from California State University, Los Angeles. He has taught up and down the curriculum from prealgebra to differential equations. He is currently focusing on the developmental math courses. Professor Tussy is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

R. David Gustafson is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Rock Valley College in Illinois and has also taught extensively at Rockford College and Beloit College. He is coauthor of several best-selling mathematics textbooks, including Gustafson/Frisk/Hughes' COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Gustafson/Karr/Massey's BEGINNING ALGEBRA, INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH, and the Tussy/Gustafson and Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig developmental mathematics series. His numerous professional honors include Rock Valley Teacher of the Year and Rockford's Outstanding Educator of the Year. He has been very active in AMATYC as a Midwest Vice-president and has been President of IMACC, AMATYC's Illinois affiliate. He earned a Master of Arts from Rockford College in Illinois, as well as a Master of Science from Northern Illinois University.

Diane Koenig received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Math Education from Illinois State University in 1980. She began her career at Rock Valley College in 1981, when she became the Math Supervisor for the newly formed Personalized Learning Center. Earning her Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics from Northern Illinois University, Ms. Koenig in 1984 had the distinction of becoming the first full-time woman mathematics faculty at Rock Valley College. In addition to being nominated for AMATYC's Excellence in Teaching Award, Diane Koenig was chosen as the Rock Valley College Faculty of the Year by her peers in 2005, and, in 2006, she was awarded the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award as well as the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges Award for Teaching Excellence. In addition to her teaching, Ms. Koenig has been an active member of the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges (IMACC). As a member, she has served on the board of directors, on a state-level task force rewriting the course outlines for the developmental mathematics courses, and as the association's newsletter editor.

About the Author
William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 41 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. His books include "Data and Computer Communications, Eighth Edition" (Prentice Hall, 2007), which has become the standard in the field. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering.

Epic work revised for the mid-201x's

It's hard to do justice to this work in a short review as the scope of the book is wide and it is not superficial in the depth of its coverage. With the growth of the subject and the rapid changes, an author addressing the subject of Computer Organisation and Architecture faces a huge challenge in what topics to cover and in what depth to cover them. In my opinion, in producing this text-book, William Stallings has tackled these challenges very well, with a wide range of topics being covered in a good deal of detail. This Tenth Edition has added coverage of GPGPU, heterogeneous multicore processors, cloud computing, new non-volatile RAM techniques, and others. The coverage of “embedded systems” has been extended to address the huge increase in scope which has occurred over the past few year; the coverage addressing the concepts of application processors (capable of running virtual memory based operating systems) and microcontrollers.

I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how modern computer systems work from a hardware perspective, and for people who should know how they work - too often today people on the software side of computing have too little knowledge of the hardware.

and this is one of the worst books I've ever used

Had to rent this book for a computer science class. I am a senior, and this is one of the worst books I've ever used. There is way too much text to remember anything, and problems at the end of the chapters are pretty much unsolvable just by reading through the chapter. A great waste of my time and money.

This book is well written and is complete. It helps the reader get a sound comprehensive foundation in the computer architecture field. The author makes good use of examples throughout the book to explain the theoretical aspects covered.
This book is a must read for students that learn computer architecture and for professionals in this field, in order to understand both the evolution and the most recent trends and actual implementations of the computer architecture organization concepts.
The printed book also gives access to additional online resources that are very helpful, homework problems and solutions. And two additional chapters are available online.

Josette Bettany-Saltikov is Senior Lecturer at Teesside University, UK. She has taught research methods to nursing students and other allied health care professional students for nearly 20 years. Must have textbook for nursing research!

Josette Bettany-Saltikov's textbook How to do a Systematic Literature Review in Nursing is one clinical nurses, graduate and undergraduate research students will want to have at their fingertips. Guiding the reader through the ins and outs of narrative and systematic reviews, as well as clarifying the differences, the author's easy to read style of writing helps the researcher understand the practical use of writing and reading systematic reviews. From novice to expert, all will gain a better understanding of this research instrument.
I am currently using this book in my doctoral course and as I prepare a manuscript. "Helps" that I especially appreciate include: templates throughout the text to walk the reader through the steps of writing a systematic review, choosing primary papers for inclusion in a systematic review, and writing a problem statement . For those of us who struggle with understanding the abstract concepts involved in writing research papers, this is a handbook to own.
Thank you Dr. Bettany-Saltikov for an easy to understand book on an important topic.

In 1941, Irene Nemirovsky, a Jewish writer, and her husband joined their children in a French village to escape from the German occupation of Paris. By July 1942, she was arrested by French police and sent to Auschwitz; she was dead by August. In that single year, Nemirovsky accomplished a nearly impossible feat: at breakneck speed she penned two novellas about the terrible events still unfolding in France. Her two children survived the war by hiding in attics and basements, and they carried their mother's manuscript with them. It was not until the late 1990's that the eldest daughter, now in her 70's, finally read the crumbling notes and realized that they were not merely a diary, but two fully formed works of fiction, the earliest literature ever written about World War II--written while events were actually happening. The first, STORM IN JUNE is a cacophonous, frightening, and frequently comic account of the mass exodus from Paris in 1940; the second, DOLCE, tells the story of a French village living uneasily under German occupation. It's a miracle that these novellas exist at all, but the greater miracle is that, amidst upheaval and danger, Nemirovsky somehow created work of such insight, richness, menace, and beauty.

Lyrical Writing; Deserves to be a Classic

This is the first two parts of what the author evidently intended to be a five part opus. Némirovsky was arrested in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. This manuscript, then, was written in the early years of the war in Occupied France, in which she set the novel.

In Storm in June, wealthy Parisians flee the city before it falls. The second “movement”, Dolce, concerns the complicated relationships between the inhabitants of a French country village and the German soldiers who are occupying that village.

This is lyrical writing, sustained in the translation from the French by Sandra Smith. How I wish the author could have completed this work!

Read this if: you enjoy beautiful writing. 4½ stars

Beauteous sadness

Here is a French speaking Jew from Ukraine living in Vichy France, writing a novel about the effect of the German victory in 1940. She dissected the French to a tee: the upper bourgeoisie interested only in retaining its power and money; the intellectual elite (at least those not on the Left) interested only in its privileges and self-respect; the ordinary people who showed more normal reactions to distress and loss. She even gives us the possibility of thinking an ordinary German officer might be a real human being. But the real story is not this very well written novel. It is the fact that a woman lionized by the French for her literary achievements was quickly dropped when the anti-Jewish laws of Vichy were passed. She lost all her friends but one and was deported to Auschwitz. So was her husband. A humane French policeman (one unlike most) gave her two children warnings and they survived. This book received the Renaudot prize, the French way of saying I'm perhaps sorry. But they are not really sorry.
